What to expect with new orthoses
Initially your orthoses may feel unusual or strange, possibly even a little uncomfortable. This is quite normal, and over a period of time as your body adjusts to them you will find them become significantly more comfortable. However, it is important that you allow your body to adapt to them in a gradual and safe way, to reduce the risk of any side effects.
[if !supportLists]1. [endif]Gradually introduce the orthoses
Try to initially wear the devices a little bit each day and then gradually increase this time by 30-60 minutes each day as you feel comfortable. Eg. 1 hour on day 1, then 2 hours on day 2, etc. This will only be necessary during the initial breaking in period. Remember we are all different and will adapt to the orthoses at different rates so it is important to only wear them for as long as they feel comfortable to you.
[if !supportLists]2. [endif]Listen to your body
You may feel a little discomfort in your feet, legs or back during the early stages of wearing the orthoses as your muscles and joints adapt to new pressures and load requirements. As soon as there is significant discomfort felt remove them immediately and reintroduce them the next day. This will slowly recede until a point where you will forget they are even in your shoes.
[if !supportLists]3. [endif]Walk before you run
Always allow your body to become accustomed to the orthoses during low impact activity (walking etc.) before performing any high impact activity (ie. running, football).
The orthoses may not feel the same as each other due to feet functioning differently and prescriptions being mildly different but it is important to remember to always use both orthoses at the same time; so if one becomes uncomfortable remember to remove both.
Your Podiatrist will arrange a review appointment in 1-2 weeks to ensure the overall effectiveness and comfort of the orthoses and of course if you have any concerns before this appointment please contact your Podiatrist via phone or email.
